Be Amazed with the different names a Gol Gappa is called by. Generally we know by its most popular names Gol Gappe, PaniPuri and maybe at the most Puchkas, but, do you know this special dish has lot of other names. Being the most common street bite and the most-loved snack in the country or one of best Veg Recipes of India, Golgappa or Panipuri has its own charm and place in our heart. Though they don't look same in different States of India, however the concept is same. So, Lets get started with the list and count your finger to comment below how many you know.

1. Puchka or Fuchka

These are fairly unique in relation to the Pani puri and known as puchka or fuchka in the Eastern states of India like West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Assam. A Puchka is filled with a mixture of mashed potatoes and boiled chickpeas with the tangy chutney and with spicy tamarind water. It is slightly bigger as compared to our normal panipuris. 2. Pani Puri/ PaniPoori

The Panipuri is a well known street snack in the roads of India and this is the most widespread name of the dish. So, getting a panipuri near me is the easiest job. The taste or pani puri recipe varies as you travel, hence the name is not geographically specific. However FYI, the concept is round fried crispy puri, filled with a mixture of seasoned water, tamarind chutney, spices, potato, onion and chickpeas.

3. Gol Gappa/ Gol Gappe/ Gol Guppe

Gol Gappa is also one of the widespread used name of the Pani Puri. The name Golgappa is mainly popular in New Delhi, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana as well as Bihar and Jharkand. In north India, the Gol-Gappas are not exactly round, they’re slightly stretched. If compared, the popularity of Golgappa in North India is perhaps quite similar to just like Vada Pav is to Maharashtra.

4. Pakodi

Some of you may confuse the name Pakodi with normal Pakodas, but here in these regions they are two different recipes of India. Pani puri or Gola gappa is known to as Pakodi in the internal regions of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat . The taste and recipe of panipuri here is quite spicy as lot of green chillies and mint is added to the water as well as the puri/poori is stuffed is heavily inside. The taste of Pakodi is some what similar to the chaat Sev Puri.

5. Paani ke Patashe

Pani Ke Patashe are literally the Gol gappas of Haryana. The in recipe of Pani Ke Patashe is same as the Gol gappas of North India but with little bit more chopped raw onions.

6. Patashi /Paani ke Batashe

Patashi or Batashe is another name for pani puri which is confused with the white hard sugar sweets. In Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh pani puri is know as Patashi or Paani ke Batashe. The key ingredients here used is different types of spices in the water, however the filling stays the almost same, i.e, potatoes and chickpeas or other gram. In Lucknow, you can experience our loved Gol gappa i.e. Paani ke Batashe with 5 different types of water, known as Paanch Swaad ke Batashe (typically 5 tastes), popular at Hazratganj. The water for Patashi also has flavor of dry mangoes.

7. Gup Chup

Here the Gol gappa has a very interesting name ‘Gup Chup’. Some regions of Telangana, Hyderabad, Odisha, South Jharkhand and Chhatisgarh call pani puris in the name Gup Chup. People say they call it Gup Chup due to the sound pani puris make while bursting it in the mouth and the water filling around. Gup Chups mainly consists only of boiled chickpeas or white peas and spicy water but does not have potatoes. So, the Gup chups are much lighter and low in calories than Gol gappas, but you can always ask for some onion and potatos if its available with the pani puri wala maybe for other chaats they make.

8. Phulki

Eastern districts of Uttar Pradesh and Nepal calls our favorite pani puri as Phulki and the preparation is same as referred to the above mentioned Patashi. The name phulki is not so commonly used term, but again some regions know it as this name, so we have to keep it in the list.

9. Tikki

The name Tikki for our golgappas is only called by the people of Hoshangabad in Madhya Pradesh. Hope you don’t confuse the name with popular aloo tikkis with the pani puri tikki at this region of the world. Its plain and simple, puris stuffed with yummy mixture of potatoes and chickpeas served dipping in tangy water.

10. Padaka

So, what’s in a name? Padaka is another name for pani puri and is called by only people of Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh. The name sounds little odd but does not cease the deliciousness. It tastes similar to other pani puris of Uttar Pradesh in the list as above.
